Next season, Hull FC will want to enhance several aspects of their play, but Jordan Lane believes that consistency must be the team’s main focus.
Hull’s brightest moments were few and far between this season, with only three wins to their credit. Player of the Year winner Lane urged the team to be true to their game plan and execute their plays consistently.
Using Hull’s 24-22 victory over Wigan Warriors as a benchmark, Lane thinks Hull can get better the following season if they play with more intensity and avoid distractions and the like.
He stated to Hull Live: “For us, it’s about being consistent. This year, we had moments when we showed what we were capable of; our victory over Wigan was among our best performances; however, the following week, we reverted to our previous form, which is unacceptable.
But if we truly put in the effort, we know we can have those kinds of performances every week. We ought to be able to do it against every other club in the league if we can do it against Wigan. Being dependable and never faltering is, I believe, the most important thing for us.
“If we do have a strong performance, it shouldn’t diminish too much the following week. If there are a few moments when we lose focus or experience other such things, they shouldn’t be as severe as they have been this year. That is the primary focus of our investigation.”
Hull are hoping to be a much more competitive team next year after adding new players and backroom staff. In an attempt to find unity and connection, they will try to assemble a team this preseason, as the reality of injuries, suspensions, and player departures will dash such hopes this year.
“Don’t get me wrong, it’s been difficult with the injuries we’ve had and the players coming and going, but you can’t let that bother you mentally,” Lane went on. It’s merely necessary to carry on and get everyone on the same page while working with new combinations and individuals.
“I believe that’s what this year hasn’t given us. All around, we weren’t on the same page. We had different combinations by the week, so it’s not surprising, but going forward, it can’t happen. We must maintain consistency in both our performance and availability.”
