Nigerians have been urged by the Nigeria Police Force not to intimidate others by exploiting the name or position of Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun.

The police claim that using the IG’s name or office could compromise the impartiality values that the office promotes throughout the nation.

In response to an attack on e-hailing (Bolt) driver Stephen Abuwatseya by House of Representatives member Alex Ikwechegh, the Force made these statements in a post on Monday via its official X.com handle.

A social media video that went viral shows the congressman aggressively and violently abusing the driver for requesting him to come out and retrieve the snail that was supposed to be delivered to him, according to PUNCH Online.

The member of the Aba North & South Federal Constituency, who was clearly incensed, stated twice in the video that the request was disrespectful considering his social standing.

Additionally, the member of the All Progressives Grand Alliance threatened to “disappear” the driver without any repercussions. The politician repeatedly struck the driver after he asked for the delivery charge and asked whether he knew who he was speaking to.

“Do you know who I am?” he asked. Nothing will happen if I force this driver to vanish from all of Nigeria. This rat—can you image it? This boy will not receive a single naira of my money.

“I’m not going to beat you up with my cops. I’ll take care of that myself. I’ll demonstrate my enormous brotherhood to you. I’m going to put you in my generator house, tie you up, and lie you down. Are you aware of your location? when you noticed me sitting out outside. Take a look at this monkey.

Following the driver’s official report, the Force said in the X post that it is aware of the Sunday occurrence and that the Federal Capital Territory Police Command is managing the case.

“The Nigeria Police Force is aware of the incident that occurred on October 27, 2024, in Maitama, Abuja, between Hon. Alexander Ikwegh and a Bolt driver, Mr. Stephen Abuwatseya,” the tweet states. Following Mr. Abuwatseya’s formal report at the Maitama Divisional Headquarters, the case is currently being handled by the FCT Command.

“The Police Force also encourages the public to abstain from intimidating others by using the Inspector-General of Police’s name or office, as this goes against the impartiality values upheld by the IGP’s office.”
