Matt Moylan, a standout for the Leigh Leopards, has announced that he will be retiring from professional rugby league with immediate effect.
Prior to the 2024 season, the 33-year-old signed a two-year contract with Adrian Lam’s team. However, he decided to put up his boots and left the Leigh Sports Village a year early.
With five tries and 18 assists in 22 Super League games during his first and only season in England, Moylan made an impression.
Regarding his decision to retire, Moylan stated, “It’s been a really difficult decision to call time on my career, but I’ve got to listen to my body and say enough is enough.”
“This year at Leigh has been fantastic for me. The fans’ support has been amazing, and I am incredibly thankful for the song they sang for me this year.
Being a member of a team that has achieved the greatest standing this club has had in the Super League has been an honor.
“I will enjoy watching the team in my retirement because they are in a great place.”
Having played 217 games for the Penrith Panthers, Cronulla Sharks, and Leigh, Moylan hangs up his boots after kicking 90 goals and scoring 43 tries.
In addition to playing three times for New South Wales in State of Origin, he made his debut for Australia on the international scene in 2016.
“It demonstrates how far we’ve come since our time in the Championship to be able to bring a player of Matt’s caliber to Leigh,” said Chris Chester, head of rugby at Leigh.
Both on and off the field, he has significantly impacted the team since joining.
“We respect his decision and wish him the best of luck in his retirement, even though we had hoped he would stay another year.”
Moylan played 26 games for the Leopards in 2024 and finished as the team’s leading scorer with 138 points from six tries and 57 goals.
Earlier this year, he celebrated his 200th appearance in his career when he made his debut with the Leopards. As he hangs up his boots, he will now embark on a new chapter in his life.
