Just over a month after suffering severe injuries in a vehicle accident, Ecuadorian international Marco Angulo passed away at the age of 22, according to his club.
Since the October 7 incident in the south of Ecuador’s capital Quito, the LDU Quito midfielder has been in the hospital.
According to external reports from Ecuador, he died on Monday night after undergoing many surgeries and more than a week in critical care.
The top-tier Ecuadorian team, LDU Quito, released a statement on Tuesday morning saying, “With deep sorrow and sadness, we regret to have to inform you of the death of our dear player Marco Angulo.”
“We offer his family and loved ones our deepest sympathies.
“His passing is an irreparable loss which will leave an indelible mark in our hearts.”
Major League Soccer team FC Cincinnati, Angulo’s parent club, expressed their sadness at hearing of his passing.
Angulo joined LDU Quito on loan with a buyout option in March 2024 after spending one season in the US.
Angulo played for the team 16 times. The day before the vehicle accident, on October 6, he made his final appearance.
He got three caps for Ecuador after making his debut as a substitute in a 0-0 draw with Iraq in November 2022.
“The Ecuadorian Football Association expresses its deepest sympathy over the death of Marco Angulo,” the governing body said in a statement.
“Marco was a fantastic teammate in addition to being an exceptional player. We are all deeply saddened by him, especially those of us who accompanied him on innumerable journeys, training sessions, and games.
“Rest in peace, Angulito.”
Football player Roberto Cabezas of Independiente del Valle and his friend Victor Carcopa also perished in the accident, according to Ecuadorian media.
At the time, the automobile had two other passengers. It is uncertain what condition they are in.
