Graham Coughlan, a former manager of Mansfield Town, has been appointed manager of Boston United
With Boston United in serious relegation danger in the National League right now, Coughlan, who left Stags in October 2020 following a dismal season debut, has a difficult challenge ahead of him.
Since departing Newport County in the summer with mutual consent, the Irish manager has been unemployed.
As they look to maintain the National League status they gained in May, the Pilgrims have chosen to appoint the Irishman as their next manager after a rigorous three-week hiring process, according to a club statement.
“As the Jakemans Community Stadium gets ready for Braintree Town’s visit on Saturday, he takes immediate charge of first team operations.”
After several years as an assistant manager and first team coach at Southend United, Coughlan was named permanent manager of Bristol Rovers in January 2019 after a fruitful stint in caretaker management.
After that, Couglan had a brief and fruitless tenure at Mansfield, winning just four of his 27 games as manager.
In October 2022, he returned to first team management at Newport following a time coaching Sheffield United’s under-23 team at Bramall Lane.
He kept Newport in the EFL during his first season as manager, and the following season he led the Exiles to the Emirates FA Cup’s fourth round, when they lost to Manchester United at Rodney Parade.
The Dubliner played more than 500 games during his playing career, earning three promotions and playing for teams like Livingston, Plymouth Argyle, and Sheffield Wednesday.
