According to Atlanta Police, “the injury that was sustained was not via the officers on scene,” but rather occurred to the victim’s leg as they were escaping a fight.

According to information from Atlanta Police and a report in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, young Scooter passed away on Friday night, March 28, the rapper’s 39th birthday.

Late Friday night, Atlanta Police Lt. Andrew Smith conducted a press conference to provide information regarding the circumstances that are said to have contributed to Young Scooter’s (real name: Kenneth Edward Bailey) death. Smith claims that after a guy closed the door on cops, police established a perimeter outside the house after responding to a complaint regarding a fight involving a weapon at a residence. According to Smith, two males ran out of the back of the house, one of them going back inside while the other jumped two fences on his way out.

Smith stated, “When officers located him on the other side of the fence, he appeared to have suffered an injury to his leg.” Young Scooter was the man who jumped the gates, according to the AJC story.

According to Atlanta Police, the man passed away at the Grady Marcus Trauma Center after being transported there.Smith refuted extensive social media rumors that Scooter had been shot dead by Atlanta Police Department officers during the press conference. To be quite clear, the officers on the scene did not cause the injury. The male was running at the time.

Playboi Carti posted the news on Instagram Stories with the phrase “SMFH,” as young Scooter’s friends lamented the deceased rapper on social media. Quavo posted a video of Scooter performing along with the words “ion understand” on X, along with emojis of a shattered heart and prayer hands. Throughout Friday, dozens of posts wishing the late rapper a happy birthday were uploaded on his Instagram Stories.

Although Scooter was born in South Carolina, his family relocated to Atlanta when he was just nine years old, and ever since then, the rap hotspot has served as the foundation for his music career. In 2012, he made his local debut with the song “Colombia.” In 2014, he collaborated with Future, Juicy J, and Young Thug on the song “DI$Function.” He made two appearances on the Billboard charts: Future & Juice WRLD’s “Jet Lag” (his only Billboard Hot 100 appearance, peaking at No. 72) and Young Thug’s “Guwop,” which featured Quavo & Offset of Migos, in 2016 (peaking at No. 45 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs list).

For more information, Billboard has contacted a representative for Young Scooter and the Atlanta Police.
