In addition to giving current drivers at Alpine a sobering warning, Franco Colapinto has given an update on his Formula 1 future.
After Carlos Sainz’s entry at Williams left him without a seat, the Argentine joined Alpine as their reserve driver for 2025.
In addition to doing simulator and test work at the company’s Enstone base, Colapinto’s presence puts a lot of pressure on Alpine’s current driver, Jack Doohan, to perform well for the team.
“I’m an Alpine driver, I have a contract with them,” Colapinto said in an update regarding his future with the team during an appearance on the Nude Project podcast. I work there, and I’m hoping to get a chance to work with that group. They worked so hard to obtain me. It’s too late now if the other fools dozed off.
Will Colapinto replace Doohan at Alpine?
At the Japanese Grand Prix, Doohan had a serious incident where he crashed at 180 mph after failing to open his DRS before Turn 1.
Due to his incident, the Australian was unable to run on high fuel, which put him in a challenging situation throughout Sunday’s race as he was unable to finish in the top ten.
Alpine is currently at the bottom of the constructors’ standings and has yet to earn a point in the 2025 Formula One season. Pierre Gasly and Doohan’s best finishes at Suzuka would be P13 and P15.
Colapinto tested with Alpine at Monza during the Japanese Grand Prix weekend, where he raced in an older 2023 A523. Paul Aron, another reserve driver, also participated in the Testing of Previous Cars program.
Since the outings are prearranged and in this instance used to give rookie drivers track time, there is no clear connection between Doohan’s crash and the tests.
