Manchester United have made significant strides to bolster their attacking lineup by signing Dutch striker Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna. The 23-year-old has agreed to a five-year contract, with an option for an additional year, in a deal valued at €42.5 million (£36.5 million). This transfer marks the first major acquisition under the club’s new sporting director, Dan Ashworth.
Zirkzee had an impressive season with Bologna, scoring 12 goals and providing 4 assists, playing a pivotal role in the club’s qualification for the Champions League group stage. His performances also earned him a spot in the Netherlands national team, where he made his senior debut during the Euro 2024 quarter-final victory against Turkey.
Manchester United’s manager, Erik ten Hag, expressed enthusiasm about Zirkzee’s addition, highlighting the striker’s potential to enhance the team’s attacking prowess. The club aims to integrate Zirkzee into the squad promptly, providing him with opportunities to adapt to the Premier League’s demands and contribute to the team’s objectives in the upcoming season.
In addition to Zirkzee, Manchester United have also secured the signing of Danish striker Rasmus Højlund from Atalanta. The 20-year-old agreed to a five-year contract, with the option of an additional year, in a deal worth £64 million, potentially rising to £72 million with add-ons. Højlund’s arrival further underscores the club’s commitment to strengthening their attacking options.
These strategic acquisitions reflect Manchester United’s ambition to revitalize their forward line and compete at the highest levels domestically and in European competitions.
