When West Ham United won a contentious late penalty in their Premier League match at the London Stadium, Manchester United was left feeling dissatisfied. After it was determined that Matthijs de Ligt had fouled Danny Ings within the penalty area, the Hammers were awarded the spot kick.
To the chagrin of Erik ten Hag and his men, referee David Coote directed to the spot after reviewing the contact on the VAR monitor. Although there didn’t seem to be any contact between De Ligt and Ings, the penalty was called even if the West Ham forward might have handballed. View the incident below:
To give the home team all three points in a 2-1 victory, Jarrod Bowen blasted past Andre Onana from 12 yards out. Bowen found room on the right wing as the Red Devils fell behind in the last twenty minutes. After the England international found Ings in the center of the box, Crysencio Summerville took advantage of the striker’s mishit attempt and opened the scoring.
Lukasz Fabianski, 39, had to be called upon multiple times to keep the home team in the match, but he was unable to stop Casemiro’s header inside the final ten minutes, giving Ten Hag’s team the impression that they had earned a point away from home.
Statement on the Penalty Incident from the Premier League
Shortly after Bowen’s goal gave West Ham the victory, the Premier League took to social media to explain how and why the referee and VAR arrived at their ultimate ruling. The account for the match center clarified:
“The VAR suggested an on-field review after concluding that Ings’ lower leg had made enough contact. The referee gave a penalty after reversing his initial ruling.
The judgment clearly irritated the Man United players, as De Ligt persisted in claiming his innocence after the final whistle. Ten Hag’s team dropped to 14th place in the Premier League as a result of the victory, which saw West Ham surpass their opponents for the day.
