Aston Villa secured a spot in the FA Cup quarter-finals for the first time in a decade with a 2-0 victory over Cardiff City on Friday, but manager Unai Emery insists his team are “contenders, not favourites” to win the competition.

Villa’s triumph, courtesy of a brace from Marco Asensio, sees them reach the last eight of the tournament for the first time in 10 years as they continue their pursuit of their first major silverware since claiming the EFL Cup in 1995-96.

With at least five Premier League sides in the quarter-finals, including strong competitors like Manchester City, Newcastle United, and Nottingham Forest, Emery remains cautious about his team’s chances of lifting the trophy.

“The players put in a fantastic performance [against Cardiff],” he said. “At home, with our football, we feel comfortable. We respected the opponent.

“Even when facing a Championship team, we must show respect because any match can be lost, regardless of being the better team.

“Reaching the quarter-finals makes us happy, but we know the challenges ahead. We must enjoy every moment while continuing to perform well, especially at home.

“The FA Cup is significant for the club, the supporters, and us as a team. It also presents an opportunity to win a trophy. However, we are not considered the favourites—just contenders.”

Asensio has now netted four goals in his last three appearances for Villa in all competitions, making him the Premier League’s top scorer since his debut on February 9. Meanwhile, fellow loanee Marcus Rashford has created more chances (13) than any other Premier League player during that same period.

With Villa also pushing for European qualification in the league and preparing for their Champions League last-16 tie against Club Brugge, Emery stresses the importance of squad depth in managing the demanding schedule.

“It’s crucial for the team, and also for the players to achieve their individual goals,” he added.

“Marco Asensio is adapting brilliantly, and the same goes for Marcus Rashford. We will rely on them in the coming matches and challenges ahead.

“We need the players who arrived in the last transfer window, as well as those returning from injury. Every player will be vital for the games in the upcoming weeks and months.”
